Desert Flower Overcoming Weakness, Reactive Attachment Disorder, Sexual Abuse & Disabilities eBook Jeanine Ricketts Reviews

I believe the person who left the one star review was probably the only honest reader. I think the others were friends of the author who felt put on the spot when asked to write a review.
If the child in this book grew up to be anywhere near "normal" it proves miracles do happen. She no doubt has a strained relationship with her mother, or has become an expert at repressing feelings.
Mrs. Ricketts, what do you think "undamaged" babies do? Infants sleep, eat, poop, cry, repeat. That's it. And they need to grow into their body. Her length and weight were quite normal, hardly concentration camp victim status.
These are of course the smallest of observations on how deranged you are, but since the book starts with those, I thought I would too.
I have children, and I understand the challenges of different personalities and teens, I'm with you there, but the brain washing techniques of what sounds like sleep deprivation mixed with constant "prayer" sound nothing less than cult like and torturous. I know every parent has tried things that others disagree with, but when everyone was disagreeing with you, maybe you should have listened??
The writing itself was dull and laborious, and I was only able to get through it out of morbid curiosity at just how much worse it was going to get.
My heart goes out to Lorna as I have no doubt this book was the tip of a very cold iceberg. I feel that when Jeanine says Lorna told her to "tell it, tell it all" it was probably more to validate everything she has tried to explain to people over the years when she says "My mother is crazy" and they all say "oh come on, she can't be that bad..."
Yes. Yes she can!
I wouldn't recommend the book
Any family raising an adopted child with RAD will find this book to be inspiring. This book is not about a troubled child, it's about seeking a way to keep a RAD child safe while helping the child feel loved at the same time. In my opinion there is a big difference between a troubled child and a RAD child. Author Jeanine Ricketts does an amazing job of explaining the behavior of a child that is not attached. A RAD child desperately needs a devoted parent in their life to be the filter of their actions until they can get the help and counseling they need. This book is a wonderful example of the sacrifice a family has to be willing to give in order to raise a RAD child. This book relates a desperate mothers plea as she turns to a higher being for strength as she struggles to find a reasonable explanation for the child's uncontrollable behavior. Strength is what she found in prayer as she knew the child she was raising was special and needed something more than she could offer. The fact that Lorna is such an amazing, successful, influence to others today is a direct result of a dedicated mother, father and family that supported her through the trials of an unattached childhood. It is important the reader has an informative back ground of RAD to fully understand this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone raising a RAD child. It left me with a confidence that if we endure great things can happen for our child.
This book is a self righteous biography that the Author wrote to try to justify her bad parenting. It comes across as self admitted child abuse by a religious fanatic. Her daughter became "a wayward child" due to an unloving, unaccepting and controlling upbringing, not because she came that way as a newborn baby. Her claims of Lorna coming to her as "damaged goods" is highly questionable.
Because Jeanine is so brainwashed by her religion she never allowed Lorna to be her true self. She tried so desperately to make her child into what she views as the perfect daughter that she stripped away the child's self esteem. From her own words, Jeanine tells a story of how she is the abuser and not the victim of abuse as she believes. This story is lacking the love and acceptance every child needs from their parents. The only way Jeanine tries to help her child is by praying for her and sending her away for others to deal with. My heart goes out to this poor child.
Desert Flower is the incredible story of one family's struggle to help their wayward daughter find peace and happiness through good life choices. The journey is fraught with disappointment, grief, and sorrow, but Lorna's redemption in the end is a testament of what never giving up, forgiveness, endless prayer, and unconditional love can accomplish. The book is written in such a way (through Jeanine's extensive journals and family letters) that we are thrust into the midst of the battles and emotions so that we acutely feel the bitter despair and anguish of the parents. This book is an inspiring guidebook of how, with faith and divine guidance, even the most hopeless of situations can have a happy resolution. My favorite part of the book was the Appendix -- "What We Learned Concepts and Practices That Helped Us." This contains must read advice for all parents, honed from the refiner's fire and spoken from the wisdom that can only come from adversity.
