In The Beatles In Mono, Andrew Hickey examines, track by track, the Beatles' work as it was originally created, in mono.

Going through the 2009 The Beatles In Mono box set, he looks at the band's influences, their musical techniques, and the progression of their career from Love Me Do through to Get Back.

As a bonus, this edition also contains appendices giving brief overviews of the stereo-only material the band recorded, as well as 'non-canon' albums like the Anthology series, Live At The BBC and Liverpool Sound Collage.

A splendid time is guaranteed for all!

This book is also available as a paperback.

The Beatles In Mono eBook Andrew Hickey

Among the myriad books actually analyzing The Beatles' studio works, this book rates near the bottom. Instead of looking at the actual mono mixes and comparing them to their stereo counterparts, Hickey takes the opportunity for a song-by-song review. In this, Hickey's view is that, if a song is not a ground-breaking piece of art, it must be a piece of crap. The author makes no space for a song that might simply be fun. I got tired throughout the book of hearing how bad The Beatles' songs are. And you will not find a study of the group's mono recording process anywhere in Hickey's book. I suggest looking elsewhere.

The Beatles In Mono eBook Andrew Hickey Reviews

If you want to hear the Beatles the way they played in reality, you must get this Mono Set. The only two albums the Beatles mixed in stereo are 'Yellow Submarine' and 'Abbey Road'. All the others were mixed in Mono with the Beatles actually involved in the mixing process. When it came time to mix the albums in stereo (for American audiences) the Beatles told their producer, George Martin, to do it for them and left the studio. Martin did an outstanding job in stereo mixing but neither He or the Beatles took stereo seriously. They focused their creativity in 'High Fidelity' which I dare to say is the most accurate reproduction of their music. This set is my favorite compilation of all their previous compilations and will be yours too once you've heard this collection. I heartily recommend this for any Beatles fan!
Great Book Very informative Love it
A good read. This only deals with CD reissues, which is disappointing, but touches on musical aspects, that more than makes up for the limited subject matter.
Reads like a series of unedited blog posts. Writer does not make this reader feel that the the writer was really interested in the material. A disappointing purchase.
Whether you prefer to hear The Beatles in mono or stereo, this well organized collection helps to straighten out the various versions/mixes of this timeless rep. The Beatles, as with the Stones, early Pink Floyd, The Who, The Kinks, The Zombies, etc released their records in both formats, and not always by their own choosing, which resulted in variants of these songs going out to the unwashed masses. With the Beatles catalog, their own participation and involvement in the studio process lent credence to the importance of mono vs. stereo mixes. So this book helps to set things straight for those who only know of the grand stereo releases played on radio, etc.

Still, I've read enough copy about the Beatles to know that seldom does one come across objective, critical evaluations of their work. As fans, we're always going to show our personal biases. The author of The Beatles in Mono is extraordinarily biased and one-sided in his evaluation of the music and in his preference of artists, but this did grow out of a blog, where one has the freedom to speak what one wishes. Once you look past those issues, Hickey does a fine job of laying out enough of the facts to make this collection worth a read.
For someone who is a Beatles fan the author criticizes almost every track in the Beatles cannon the exception of a handful of songs on each album. The Beatles were not hacks. And the world voted with their wallets so someone likes their music. You should be able to read music or play an instrument to appreciate this book because the author often references chords and beats per measure.
Book is cheaply done and the appearance is as if it was printed off a computer with enlarged print.
Absolutely nothing new in review and after a few albums the author stops comparing the mono version to the stereo version which is the entire point of the book????????????????????
