This book involves incest, rape, and extremely dark adult situations. If you are looking for a clean read, this book is NOT for you. That being said, I was drawn into this macabre saga by the incredible depth of the characters and couldn’t put the book down, even though I found the subject matter unsettling. After Emma and Trey are orphaned by an accident, Trey gives up his part-time job and his dreams for college to remain home and raise his ten-year-old sister. The two have a deep relationship built on trust and isolation, yet over the years, Trey violates their bond. Emma spends the rest of her life struggling with love/hate feelings toward him. After his sudden death, which she thinks is her fault, she finds herself alone in the world, struggling to trust anyone. There are many horrible things that happen to this poor girl, it’s no surprise that the secret place she and Trey discovered as children eventually becomes the psychological secret place she lives in in her mind for many years.
The subject matter is disturbing, but Emma’s character is such a strange mix of strength, depth, and naiveté that it’s impossible to put the book down. Jeremy, the hero who comes to her rescue, is also a very intriguing character, but I find it difficult to believe he would stay with her for so many years when she is certifiably nuts.
I think these characters were superbly crafted and the writing was excellent. The story is far over the top for anyone with delicate sensibilities. It’s like a horrific accident you just can’t turn away from. This is a well-written story if you can stomach it.

The Secret Place edition by Melodie Starkey Romance eBooks Reviews
This story made me cry. For lost innocence. For love that should have been a life line that became a noose, not only for Emma but also Trey. Already feeling guilty about being the favored child he is already trying to show Emma that she is loved. However, as the love he is showered with is full of obsession, that is the only love he knows how to show Emma.
Emma trusting that her brother loves her and not knowing that even love has boundaries. Isolated from the world they cling to each other too tightly.
I have to say I was also uncomfortable with Jeremy, 10 years older than Emma his obsession with Emma was too reminiscent of Trey's. Other reader's may not see it as such, but I am afraid my reaction probably would have been closer to Nancy's.
Even though I have issues with certain story points, I had no issue with the story telling. While the issue itself is black and white the character's reactions seemed real in that they were grey. People made mistakes and had to learn to live with them. While I feel what Emma had to endure way to much, unfortunately I have known too many cases where these type of misfortunes seem to follow certain people. They can't get out of the cycle, luckily many are able to break the cycle.
While I wish certain story points did not exist. I will read more by this author.

I actually did not want her to get with Jeremy. First we see him in his mid twenties obsessing over a teen age girl. Then we find out he loved the daughter in his previous relationship more than the mother. When Emma becomes ill he keeps her without getting her any psychiatric help. For me these were major bombs going off. While I understood the author's point of view, I am afraid the way she wrote Jeremy did not make me want him to get with Emma.
This book was shocking, well written and engaging. I would like to pay my compliments to the author for writing such a complex situation and still having me feeling for each of the characters, crying at the end of the book and thinking over everything that happened.
Let's make this completely clear. If this was a story of incestuous abuse, I would not have continued reading. But it wasn't, and I did. I don't even know how to describe WHAT this was, but I both disliked Trey for doing what he did and pitied him, because he really did care for Emma. They were good siblings and perhaps he could have been a different kind of good for her. But he messed up. He messed up a lot.
As stated previously, I don't know how to describe this book, but it was a good read and I don't know what to do with my feelings now. I'm definitely keeping this and recommend it for anyone who needs a book to reflect on or something to think about.
I can not say enough how much I love this book. I could not put this book down. The author has a way of making you feel you are right there going through all the struggles of Emma. She makes you feel sorry for Trey, who was so wrong in what he did but you couldn't help but feel for him. What a sad life they had but good people were put in her life. I loved the characters in this book. What a great read. I am so glad I stumbled across this gem of a book. I will be ordering the rest of her books...
I can not say enough about this book. I absolutely loved it. The incest did not bother me a bit. I know that is "touchy" for some people, but I believe in any type of MUTUAL love. It transcends any boundary. I'm sure I will get many negative comments about that statement. The other horrific events that befall Emma are what is truly tragic. This poor girl just can"t catch a break! The story was written beautifully. I urge anyone to read it. Dont let the story line scare you.
This book was recommended in an online group that I am a part of. Quite often their preferences are along the sci-fi genre, so for this to have been suggested I figured "It must be good". I was not disappointed. Though incest, one of the prevailing subject matters, is one that is not often discussed publicly, it is one that needs to be addressed. Here, the author did so in a manner that was not "in your face", nor dismissive of either person. She alluded to the repercussions of early sexual development without having to spell them out to the reader. The strength and depth in her portrayal of every single person in the storyline will keep you riveted. As for me, it kept me turning the pages well into the night!
