The Last Gambit Om Swami 0009352640926 Books Reviews

Amazing Book! Seems like this book is meant for 14 year olds and above. I am nine years old, so my parents read this book aloud, skipping a few sections that were not relevant to me.

Chess is an ancient Indian game but there is only one Indian World Chess Champion so far. Om Swami's first work of fiction is outstanding. I hope he will write many more fictional stories. I never knew the names of some spectacular chess openings and defenses until I read this book. It is a very motivational book which encouraged me to take playing chess seriously.
Amazing read. It has everything to captivate you till the end. Thrill, romance, laughter, excitement and above all the priceless words of practical wisdom which would make the narrator qualify for world championship and compete against the mighty Andrei Kulikov – a mysterious automaton who is naturally wired to just play for chess to win. Tears and smiles would come naturally while you move through the pages (in no time!)
The book appears out to be a real-life story and Vasu seems like a living person writing his memoir. His trials and tribulation, cries and frustration, constant self-doubt, success and failures are seemed very real to which we can relate. He’s not your super-human individual found often in science fiction who’s bound to win in any circumstances. Rather, he loses and bruises during crucial moments. Failure goes hand in hand but what stands out is that he keeps pursuing and that’s one of the key messages IMO of the book. Set one goal and Keep pursuing it till the goal and you become one.
Vasu eventually loses and wins at the same time – how? Find out yourself. The climax will leave you with tears and joy and – you’d feel proud of and sad for Vasu simultaneously.

Make sure your tummy is full before you start reading the book as you'd find it hard to put down in the middle.
I've been putting off writing this review as I wanted to spend the time to really think through what I would write, and give this book the proper review it deserves. I've put it off long enough, and feel it's better to write the review and put it out there rather than wait until I find the proper time (which could take a loooong time given I have three children aged 5 and under that keep me super busy! So...

Om Swami's books, blog and Black Lotus App have changed my life. I came across Om Swami's blog after I had a soul searching time of my life thinking a lot about my teacher (Baba Hari Dass from Almora) since I was a little kid. Babaji recently suffered a stroke and does not teach or offer private audiences anymore and I was experiencing intense feelings of what I can only describe as some sort of deep home sickness, and nostalgia. I was wondering if I would ever find anyone who embodied love and created a sense of peace for all those that were around him like Babaji. The next day, I "stumbled" upon Om Swami's blog, and that was about a year ago now. Since that time, I have read all of his writings (blog and books) and watched his youtube channel videos. It's important for me to see how I feel when I'm in his presence and I'm luck enough to be attending California Meditation retreat this September.

It was no accident that I stumbled upon Om Swami's blog, that's my firm belief. In the last year, I have been trying to instill the core virtues that Om Swami advises we build into our life. I will share some other ways his writings have steered my life recently

1) I've stopped drinking coffee
2) almost completely gave up alcohol (my whiskey collection is starting to gather dust!)
3) Recently took a vow to not eat any concentrated sweets for 40 days to help build my will power
4) exercise much more regularly
5) eat a much better diet (his book Wellness sense was a good motivator)
6) have meditated almost every day for the last year
7) have become more calm in my life (wife agrees)

Om Swami has really laid out for us how to live a virtuous life and experience for ourselves the peace and bliss that is our nature. With discipline and persistence I plan to keep walking this path and hope to become his disciple one day.

I plan to post this review to all of Om Swamis book listings as I feel others have written excellent reviews for each book that really give you a sense of what the book is about. My experience ewas one of reading all of his books and writings in a short period, so for me they are all blended together into one divine body of work that can produce profound effects if the time is right in your life.
